I haven't tried if this would work for me, but I have similar problem of not being able to run VMWare after upgrading to Gutsy Gibbon. Hopefully solution works.

It worked! I used the following file in the step 2: http://platan.vc.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/vmware-any-any-update115.tar.gz
The rest - as described. It complained during compilation of modules on some strings that might not work (not sure what it was), but then compiled and installed. Require to run vmware as root, but so far it's ok.

                            I was able to resolve this using info here and on others threads. I would like to outline this as I found the task frustrating</DIV>
 <BR /><DIV>
1) Install VMWARE as normal, do not run vmware-config.pl</DIV>
<BR /><DIV>
2) Download and extract the any-any update, <A href="http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/vmware-any-any-update114.tar.gz" class="jive-link-external">http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/vmware-any-any-update114.tar.gz</A></DIV>

3) The any-any update contains some tars (vmblock.tar, vmmon.tar, vmnet.tar) copy these to /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source (you will overwrite existing)</DIV>

4) apt-get install g++-4.1 (this is not installed by default)</DIV>
<BR /><DIV>
5) run the config with these switches, vmware-config.pl --default --compile</DIV>

This should work like a champ.
