Certainly agree with the last sentence that having making yourself 'happy' as a core value often makes one unhappy. Happiness is great and it comes and goes like sorrow and pain. There is another use of 'happy', like if someone can say that although life isn't happy all the time they are happy with themselves and their world as it is.

I am happy when I wake up.
The day can get worse if I think of those who have little hope of happiness.
Those who chase happiness are like gamblers chasing the money they have lost. They are the ones who could be happier with more basic aims and expectations.
