All was well ...

My hope is that lots of white folks will finally get what our African-American brothers and sisters have been trying to get through our thick skulls for about half a century now. It's different being black. No matter whether we think we are racists. And anyway, no person of color believes any white person who says, "I'm not a racist."

When we hunt for housing, real estate agents regard us more favorably. We don't get followed by store security. We get better deals from car salesmen, more generous treatment from juries, and -- despite myths of rampant affirmative action -- our kids rarely compete with equally qualified African-American kids because so many urban schools, where most black kids are educated, are flat-out disasters.

well I really am nor a racist! I only care about people and what they have in their hearts, I have many more black freinds then I do white, for the simple reason, white people are so uptight while black people know how to relax and have fun. So it doesn't matter to me what colour a person is, only if they can smile and laugh easily, can't stand glum folk!

Wouldn't you think that Gates brought a lot of this upon himself? How can you compare the two events with so little evidence? Maybe the white guy showed him identification without a sarcastic remark to the cops?
I know I will get flack for saying this, but part of the report on Gates said they had been having break- ins in the area. Would that not be a factor? The fact that blacks are involved in 80% of the crimes. Would that not be a factor?

We are going overboard on this black/white issue and it is hurting the proper healing of race relationships. There is always someone wanting to stir up the water.

I think it is perfectly reasonable for people of color to be outraged about mistreatment from the police.

shaor - You live in Canada. And Canada has a history of racism just like the US. Everyone in the US functions in a system of white supremacy and racism: they are the vehicles for all interactions. We are tainted by racism because it is an institutionalized system embedded in every part of society. Think about the racialized language used when describing ourselves.

Consider this:

[i]The generalized "other" must be endowed with a personality, a subjectivity, a temperament and capability by which to be encountered. To this purpose, white supremacy produces a vast system of narratives that reinvent personhood for those it has deprived of personhood by generalizing. These narratives become th...

@jay8h - You are assuming the privilege to frame discussion and debate as if you are the gatekeeper with the power to say yea or nay on the subject of race and racism. But thanks for commenting as you have supported Goldstein's point.

Wouldn't you think that Gates brought a lot of this upon himself?
Sure. But wouldn't you think that if Sgt. Crowley would have been more professional and diffused instead of escalating the situation we wouldn't be commenting on this issue? Crowley teaches a class on racial profiling, so he shouldn't have been "surprised and confused" about Gates' alleged behavior and concerns about racism and racial profiling. Anyway, [url="http://clipmarks.c...

p.,s. Jay8h - I have a cop and cabbie racial profiling story too.I can also tell the tale of a black family, my friends, forced to sell their son's BMW (graduation present),because of police harassment. There's the case of my brother and the car dealership:Him impeccable credit and lots of money; them - tried to not to sell him the vehicle he wanted. And then there was the time .... but hey, we"re all black and therefore criminals. Or are we the 20% not criminals who still deserve harassment? I don't know jay - can you shine some light on this conundrum?

you ppl disgust me. ifit wernt for all the ppl running around screaming about racism , it would already have been forgoton about, but no you ppl keep insisting that is rampant, and the kids hear this, and thats how its bieng passed on now, not by racist (other than to thier own kids) but ppl spouting about it in the news and on places liek this, and jsut so everyone gets the facts 100 % correct, africans sold teh slaves to the slave traders, they didnt go kidnapping them or anything, and im not glorifyign the past at all, but slaves were regarded as workers, workhorses, and only a small percent were mistreated like its been portrayed, aain slavery is wrong, but seriously, its time for everyo...

Zizzy, my meaning was simple---I like black people as to me they are fun, always ready to dance and smile, its the way they are, inbred in them. I meant no slur on whites, I am white!! you have taken what I said and turned it against whites! I have good white freinds too we all get along great. But I really love the way black people are always ready to laugh and dance, relax! Thats all!!

Oh shut the fuck up and get a spell checker Jasen, you intellectual clout.

@Shaor,

I think Zizzy is just trying to point out to you how individual's should be judged as opposed to groups of people. I don't think she meant to imply anything else but to maybe expand your mindset

Of course, I don't want to speak for Zizzy, so forgive me if I am wrong.

In my class and place, I did not recognize myself as a racist because I was taught to see racism only in individual acts of meanness by members of my group, never in invisible systems conferring unsought racial dominance on my group from birth.

How true! Seems like we see racism, instead, as either 1) active, felt hatred, or 2) taking race into account in any way. We who are white rarely notice the most pernicious kind of racism:
"invisible systems conferring unsought racial dominance on my group from birth." We are not equal, in America. We do not begin at the same starting line, and we do not run on the same course.

His intellect hit me like a ton of bricks. (and because I know you will not get that I will insert sarcasm here)

From now on if you are gonna try to play cool on the internet do not say:
roflmao

Put it in bold and caps and say ROTFLMAO

And if you wanna play even cooler than that try something other than lol, although I'll have to hand it to ya, you did try lololol this time.

LOL....in what universe are you a judge of what is " cool"?

No need to freak just cuz you got caught out
