masbury says: A record election - only 1 president [Reagan, on the heels of Carter and the Iran hostage crisis] ever received votes from a higher percentage of the nation's population. And imagine how much higher the percentage might have been without voter suppression efforts. Why don't you request a meeting with him and you can kiss his ring? Praise be to the One True Savior, The Most Holy and Chosen One Reigns Supreme. For those idiots that take the religious metaphor - remember it was stupidity akin to yours that crucified Christ because people wouldn't accept a message that differed from their indoctrinated teachings. And he's not even in office yet - that's the hilarious thing! @Oortcloud - The religious metaphors are weird, aren't they -- and certainly do show an immense hostility on anyone they deem to designate as a 'messiah.' @masbury - Thanks for the info. It was, indeed, an overwhelming landslide victory. First off, this was NOT an "overwhelming landslide victory". Anyone who thinks that is the case needs to take a closer look at the past. Not to mention if that is the way you think then the next time your kids (or grand kids) bring home a report card with a 67 on it be sure to tell them what an "overwhelming" achievement that is. I'll stick to calling a 98 an overwhelming achievement...read on.... There is a huge difference here. In '84 Reagan won 58.8% of the popular vote (Obama won 52.8%) and won 525 of the 538 electoral votes (Thats 97.6%) (Obama won 365, 67.8%) . Reagan won every state except Minnesota, Obama only won 28 plus DC and a nebraska 2nd district With McCain winning 22 states... Making a comparison between these two events is not even close to the same. You are comparing Reagan's second term run (an incumbent race) with Obama's first term run. To be fair you need to compare Obama's victory with all non-incumbent victories (e.g. Reagan's first term win). To be fair again the comparison I offer above is not fair either as Reagan was running against a sitting president rather than a term limited president. So a better comparison would be 1960, 1988 and 2000. The major point I was trying to make was that even the interpretation of the numbers are falling prey to the hype that the Obama campaign has created. One thing is for sure, the man and his team have certainly set a new standard as to how to run a presidential election effort. I believe that if does a decent job over the next four years we will see a change in the type of person who runs for office. It will become more of a contest of popularity and charisma than one of true qualifications. So I personally have mixed feelings about how I hope he will do. On the one hand I hope he is a resounding success (even though I did not vote for him) because I want to see our country prosper and it wou... It was hardly hype that got Obama elected. In the last six weeks of the campaign, he pitched issues, issues, issues, while McCain said little about himself and his platform, running fantastic anti-Obama allegations. In the end, you'll find millions of people voted for Obama because they really did believe he offered a better shot at economic prosperity than McCain; millions others voted for him because they found McCain's approach too much like Bush, McCain too hotheaded, Sarah Palin under-exposed to world issues, and the GOP's torrent of anti-Obama absurdities representative of a kind of politics they were ready to leave behind. If you truly believe that 97% of the voting African American population voted for Obama because of the issues you are fooling yourself. And if you believe that the most expensive presidential campaign in history was not hype you too have fallen prey. I'm not putting the guy down or attacking him I'm just pointing out the aspects of the way he ran the campaign. BTW for reference: OBAMA’S OCT 1-15 SPENDING = $105,599,963.76 That’s more than $293,000 an hour. It’s also 49% of EVERYTHING McCain has spent the entire time he has been running for president ($216,769,840). By contrast, McCain’s Oct. 1-15 spending was $9,246,618.70 (or $26,000/hr). Well, let's pretend no virtue on McCain's part here - he would gladly have outspent Obama if he'd thought he had a chance of raising that much money. People gave it - more donors than in any campaign in history. That's how it works. It's not like Obama robbed them. And many of those television commercials were policy-based candidate familiarity ads - made all the more needful because the McCain campaign kept saying "what do we really know about Obama?" Ads and hype are two different things: McCain's ads were hype; a much lower percentage of Obama's were. McCain lost in every demographic except older people. And an astonishing 40%, I believe, of McCain voters were convinced Obama was a ... I certainly do not disagree that if given the chance McCain would have spent that kind of money as well. Just for reference however it is somewhat understandable the misunderstanding about him being Muslim: "I've always been a Christian," said Obama, focusing on his own personal lack of practice of Islam as a child to deny any connection to Islam. But Muslims do not see practice as key. For them, that he was born to a line of Muslim males makes him born a Muslim. Further, all children born with an Arabic name based on the H-S-N trilateral root (Hussein, Hassan, and others) can be assumed to be Muslim, so they will understand Obama's full name, Barack Hussein Obama, to proclaim him a born M... What is not understandable is why Republican speakers kept raising this issue and hinting there was truth to it. Mr. Pipes' explanation notwithstanding, the people who were saying it were doing so because they knew there were those on the right who would stridently oppose anyone they thought a Muslim. They didn't see it through Muslim eyes - not seeing "practice as key." They saw it as yet another slippery deceit by a person they regarded as a faker of Christianity, and many in the GOP were eager to exploit that ignorance. I guess it is understandable that the GOP would do that; it's also corrupt. people wouldn't accept a message that differed from their indoctrinated teachings....uh....the "indoctrinated teachings" in question here are the very foundations of the United States. I'd say it is diferent from indoctrinated teachings. To me it makes no difference with what majority he won - his actions and inactions since he took office are awful. Simply getting elected is not enough. I remember Saddam got 100% of the votes - did that make him a great president? Not a viable comparison I know - my point is that regardless of how you got elected, your actions after afterwards will determine what kind of leader you are. So far Obama actions along with his comrades in Congress is disgusting. Are you kidding me? Few presidents have acted as quickly and decisively as President Obama. I'm making a rubber stamp with the words IDIOT on it for people that complain about what Obama has done or not done when HE'S ONLY BEEN IN OFFICE LESS THAN 2 MONTHS!! For christ's sake, people rolled over and spread their cheeks for 8 years with Bush. You'll also get a double stamp of IDIOT if you think the economic problems we have will be fixed in the immediate future. Everyone keeps thinking that the stimulus package was Obama's sollution to the problem. Wake up. It was a SHORT TERM SOLUTION to keep the country together long enough for him to have something to start repairing. Of the 438 "promise... Well said - over 10% are done or underway, despite being handed the nation's largest financial crisis in our lifetimes. Second pop for Oortcloud comment. despite being handed the nation's largest financial crisis in our lifetimes. So, if everything is left over from Bush - just what the hell has your idols (Obama, Pelsoi, Reid, Dodd, Frank) being doing the past two months. I'll give you a hint - they've bankrupted the nation - drained the coffers and just printed and released another trillion dollars of useless paper they call money into the system. In other words they've flushed trillions down the perverbial toilet, and sooner or later you starry eyed love struck groupies will come to realise you are just as screwed as the rest of us. You are kidding, right? The stock market began its plunge -worldwide - within 24 hours of when Sec Paulson, under Bush, decided to let Wells Fargo collapse without help. Most of the money from the post-Bush actions hasn't even gone out the door yet. And if we ever have a hope of recovering Bush's deficit, you'd better be praying this bailout works. Your argument is akin to those who try to pin the Great Depression on FDR; they forget that it began in 1929, and FDR didn't take office till '33, a whole presidential term later. Obama took office amidst failing banks, a Treasury that wouldn't account for the money it was giving out, and a plunging world-wide stock market. Blaming him for it is a little over the top. Your arguement is akin to two people driving and after they switch, the second driver has an accident but blames the first driver simply because he made a left turn a ways back - show some backbone and admit obama is the president, he and his cohorts in Congress are the ones responsible for everything since he took office. I'll give you a hint - they've bankrupted the nationSTAMP Hello McFly. Anyone in there? Why don't you crack open a little economic history and look at what our nation's deficit was before Bush spent nearly 2 trillion dollars during his disaster of a presidency. The nation was actually MAKING money against the debt and it was going down ... and then in stepped Bush and his "war on terror". he and his cohorts in Congress are the ones responsible for everything since he took officeAre you seriously suggesting that Obama has anything to do with the economic situation as it stands right now? If so DOUBLE STAMP Blaming congress is partially right, but I'll bet ... Oortcloud - your ignorance in our economic crisis is equal to Obama's, Congress' and all the presidents advisers, your blame Bush game is so out of date it borders on boredom. Are you seriously suggesting that Obama has anything to do with the economic situation as it stands right now?My God! I can not believe you or anyone would ask such an asinine questionare! THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I'M SAYING! Have you been on Mars the past few months??? Of course he does, as does Bush and almost everyone in Congress. What-me-worry-Obama - compounded an existing problem into one that could plunge us into a great depression, massive debt, hyper inflation,... Well, there you have it. THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I'M SAYING!STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP STAMP Ignorance may be bliss, but it sure isn't amusing. I've certainly never laughed at your comments dl211 kmcolo - sorry - my remarks were directed to Oortcloud not you Ignorance may be bliss, but it sure isn't amusing.I just get tired of people that ignore everything that's been pointed out that completely destroys their argument and then they hide behind "you're ignorant" comments. Bush blaming may be old hand, but it still holds true and it is still the source of many of America's problems. Rather than continually trying to ignore Bush's foul-ups or denying them, try actually owning the problems stemming from the source of republican ideologies. Trickle down does not work. Wars do not stimulate an economy if your industry exists in other countries. Occupation with little care to collateral damage as well as the use of torture CREATES... Also, as pointed out with the intro of the recent Geithner bank plan, development of implementation procedures will take at least thirty days, then at least another sixty for applications, etc., before any real action can be done. These plans take months to create from scratch, set up the mechanics of, begin to take applications, begin to disburse, and finally get to a place where reaction has worked into the system far enough that it has some affect. Had this policy been ready to go on day 1 of the Obama presidency, it would still be having no effect yet. A few things are beginning to look up now - but it is still months earlier than Obama has said to expect significant effect. dl211: At last, I've found a conservative who is in agreement that 9/11 was a miserable failure of the Bush Administration to fulfill its national security role. As you say, he and his cohorts in Congress are the ones responsible for everything since he took office he=obama congress=pelosi, reid and the rest of his outlaw gang |
