What was the Clipster conensus on polls? Perhaps they're only valid when they support what one wants to hear?

I agree. What good are polls when they don't tell you exactly how the questions were phrased, what order they were asked in, and how the samples were collected?

Besides, a poll from a Tel Aviv tabloid (Maariv) means nothing to me.

Were it a poll suggesting that Israeli's were against the war, people would be all over it.

I agree with Kore7 and brazilnut72... however, after talking to my father-in-law yesterday, a number of things that slothraspet mentioned are just not the case.. so it always seems to be an issue of who you talked to and what their impression of reality of the truth is.

If you try to make some observations and conclude things based on what's happening, instead of what people say, probably the media is a good indicator... or at least it would be in this case. When there was a small demonstration of people in Israel against the war - it was covered as a major event... so if the Israeli sentiments were largely against the war - I think we'd see that all over the news here... the reason that w...

As for the numbers - you can read them, frame them, e-mail them to
yourself all day and night. The bottom line is - have you participated
in these polls? My guess would be that you haven't and neither have I.
So, the fact that these polls don't take everyone into account is one
point, the fact that they vary so greatly (20 points in some cases) is
another and finally, the fact that they change constantly is also a
reason not to get married to them.

I think jklugman is simply trying to reiterate the points made above by Kore7 and brazilnut72. The problem with the quote, and I quote the author here , is that I was talking about the poll here in the US, i.e. something I could participate in if I was asked. The poll above is in Israel, something I certainly couldn't participate in.

Nice detective work, Josh, as always.

I don't see how this fact affects the statistical validity of polls at all, RS. Population statistics (and math in general) works the same way from the US to Israel to planemos circling Alpha Centauri.

Having just reread that entire conversation, I realize I wasn't being fair to RecordSage when I posted that quotation, because in that conversation RecordSage did concede to me the points about the validity of surveys based on samples, so now he could claim he has changed his mind, and not just for the sake of convenience.

Sorry RecordSage.

I didn't read the entire discussion. But point taken.
