When I was a kid we used to collect soda bottles and refund them at one of the 2 Grocery Stores in my neighborhood. We got 3 cent for the small bottles, 5 cent for the quart size and a whopping 15 cent for the wooden crate they used to go in. They would put the bottles in a fenced in area behind the store. There was no top on the fenced area.

We would sneak over there at night and steal all the bottles and crates we could carry and refund them the next day at the other grocery store. They didn't have a top on the fenced area either.

Once the bottles went back to the manufacturer we would go on the search again.
