“Don’t feed the troll”

Simple and surefire rule. Trolls feed on your reactions. Ignore them.

Put comments under moderation.

This way you can approve or disapprove of inappropriate comments. Don’t be overly sensitive just because they go against what you stood for. Debate is healthy.

Ban them.

If you have persistent trolls, you might just want to block them. This way they will not be able to wreck havoc as they please.

If you remove a post, aren't you preventing free speech?

Discussion boards are by design a forum for open communication, a place where the community is encouraged to freely discuss its opinions. Only remove troll posts when they become disruptive to open communication.

A troll is actually silencing the voice of a majority of the community members. Ask the troll to take their comments elsewhere.

A troll's agenda is to deflect away from an idea they cannot respond to with meaningful discussion. The goal is to get other's to run for the hills because they want to avoid the troll's intention which is to invoke intentional discord or anger. They cannot attack your idea's, so they attack you.

No one can learn with constant discord. I'm more interested in why people feel as they do, not constant political rhetoric. A troll imagines themselve as powerful, but they are not. They are weak and small and powerless regarding any sort of persuasion.

Okay...here's the deal.

I have decided, I will not put up with people ruining my clips by using them as a soapbox for their own agendas any longer, be it trolling, rudeness, unprovoked personal attacks against myself or any commenters on my clips, left / right bashing, name-calling, etc.

I do not disemvowel, as nasty comments simply aren't worth the time or effort it takes to do so. I'll delete comments that are trolling, unnecessarily hostile or impolite. There are other clips or forums folks can go to, where people are more than happy to oblige those who wish to do nothing but be nasty, inflame and argue.

If anyone has something to add ...

The "free speech" argument typically comes from folks that pretend to hold Constitutional values in high regard, but have never actually bothered to read the Constitution.

The First Amendment that guarantees free speech only guarantees it against government interference: "Congress shall make no law..."

It is completely silent on whether or not a particular group of private citizens can control was it is said on their server dollars.
