And, of course, just like sitting in a casino, it often seems like other people are winning. I suppose Twitter works like that too...we all watch as other people get @replies and retweets just like watching people at the nearby slots who seem to have better luck that us. strictly from a psychological standpoint, it seems plausible that twitter may have much in common with casinos.

I have some simple solutions for getting more responses from my tweets... Goto http://search.twitter.com/advanced and search for "RT" and other keywords and/or a location.Follow people who are already RTing other people, because they are more likely to RT you. (They "get it")
Also, leave enough empty space in your tweet to allow others to RT you without having to edit. I would guess over half of my tweets get responses.
Then, RT "forward", meaning you hope when you RT someone, they visit your profile and find something worth RTing for you. Some people will send a "thank you" tweet, while others repay you with something more meaningful...
Finally, always try to tweet interesting stuff. As ...
