Disgusting! I'm all for someone making profit ... but there does seem to be some tinge of disgust tied to these profits. Probably something to do with it being for an industry that everyone needs and it happening in an economy that is extremely crappy - yet they set records with profit. Why we vilify Exxon, we ignore Proctor & Gambel Driving can be cut back, feeding our children cannot. P&G posted record profits and a LARGER profit margin than Exxon. The more we condemn Exxon for being successful, the fewer jobs and bigger government will grow. For the past 30 years Exxon and other gasoline companies have paid more in TAXES (excise, environmental, payroll, property, income, etc) than they make in profit. If we raise their taxes even more, they will just further offshore jobs to make up the difference. PLUS, if we really want an alternative to gasoline, bankrupting the companies that pour their OWN (not taxpayer) money into research will be counterproductive in the lon... Fine, just take away Exxon's having the same rights as an individual and maybe we will all shut up. The entire world is not under the thumb of proctor and Gambel. People can choose to buy from them or choose not. Gasoline, on the other hand, has a lock-step monopoly where the few industries that exist simply keep their prices near each other so that all make sick profits. EVERYONE needs that gasoline so EVERYONE is trapped into purchasing it. We are not fighting a war because proctor and gambel are an important and major source of food. What I object to even more than the obscene profits are the even more obscene bonuses paid the the execs. It's a situation that is not confined to the petroleum industry but is endemic throughout US businesses. |
