Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.

The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been concealed by the answers.
I grabbed that off duvelic's clip QUOTES - Spirituality

I'm trying really hard not to *see* the question is about cannibalism...but just about body obsession. Eeeewww whatever is it's about!

if you eat meat then of course youll have a problem with this. i think what he's trying to show is that what's the difference? human meat, dog meat, cow meat. and the fact that he got twelve people to join him in eating it is priceless. you are what you eat, you eat what you are.

An Open Letter to Michael Mann, Disgraced Victim of Climategate
merrie
by merrie  12-18-2009    2
If you possessed but a modicum of honesty, you would simply admit your crimes. Oh -- are you familiar with Archimedes? When ice melts, water levels actually fall. It has to do with displacement and the density of ice versus water. Claiming that sea levels will rise because glaciers melt is either ignorant or fraudulent. Can you pass that along to your buddy-slash-current Science Czar John "Mass Sterilization" Holdren? He's actually been wrong about, well, pretty much everything over the years. Maybe you could help him out. Mr. Mann, the best thing you could do would be to come clean and seek forgiveness. Such an act would be both humbling and liberating. You should try it. It's an option that's always available. And it's never too late to free yourself. Would you agree that humility and contrition are noble endeavors? No Stopping New World Government
fatlester
by fatlester  Today 6:32 PM
Although the traditional nation-state as we know it is far from perfect, it is also far better than the alternative --- a one-world government that would replace the concept of sovereign nations as we know it. So says Janet Daley in a recent story appearing in the UK Telegraph...

Banks Get Into the Unemployment Biz
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-19-2009    1
Ye gods, do their little tick-tock minds ever quit? And why are we privatizing social programs? And why are our state legislators permitting the banks to abuse the unemployed through inquiry and withdrawal fees? More below: "For now, those without jobs who are trying to stretch every dollar from unemployment insurance are finding the banks eager to nibble away at even those modest sums."

First Jesus-era house discovered in Nazareth
kareval
by kareval  Today 4:23 PM    2
The archaeological find shows how different it was 2000 years ago: There were no Christians or Muslims, the Jewish Temple stood in Jerusalem and tiny Nazareth stood near a battleground between Roman rulers and Jewish guerrillas. The Jews of Nazareth dug camouflaged grottos to hide from Roman invaders, said archaeologist Yardena Alexandre, excavations director at the Israel Antiquities Authority. But the hamlet was so far off the beaten path that the caves were apparently not needed, she said. Based on clay and chalk shards found at the site, the dwelling appeared to house a "simple Jewish family," Alexandre added, as workers carefully chipped away at mud with small pickaxes to reveal stone walls. "This may well have been a place that Jesus and his contemporaries were familiar with," Alexandre said. A young Jesus may have played around the house with his cousins and friends. "It's a logical suggestion." The discovery so close to Christmas pleased local Christians.

“It’s a Catastrophe,” said a Member of the European Delegation
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 8:03 AM    2
But the agreement – reached in Friday night talks between Obama and leaders of China, India, South Africa and Brazil – was more notable for what it doesn’t accomplish than what it does, an inconvenient truth Obama ruefully acknowledged to reporters. He conceded that no more specific deal – much less a legally binding one – was possible until the issue of “trust” between industrialized and developing nations was resolved. The agreement contained none of the specific emissions targets European and African negotiators had hoped to nail down, simply a broad-brush promise by the countries in the room to cap the overall global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius and provide a written record of their planned reductions. It’s unclear how many nations, particularly poorer countries who felt shut out of the process, were included in the final deal or how they will vote if the deal is put to one.

Hospital Cleaners More Valuable Than Bankers
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  Today 1:22 AM    2
Interesting article. More below: "The study, "A Bit Rich" from the New Economics Foundation looked at six different types of British employees in aggregate, and found that: For a salary of between ?50,000 and ?12 million, top advertising executives destroy ?11 of value for every pound in value they generate. # or every ?1 hospital cleaners are paid, over ?10 in social value is generated. # For a salary of between ?75,000 and ?200,000 tax accountants destroy ?47 of value for every pound in value they generate. # For every ?1 of spent on waste recycling workers' wages, ?12 of value will be generated. Contrary to what we might expect, given the vociferous defence of the importance of wholesale banking to the UK economy, the City of London contributes only around 3 per cent of value added every year. Claims have been made about the trickle down effects of wealthy City bankers' spending in the economy but there is little real evidence to back this up"

The "patron saint of Troublemakers" :)

" Blessed Mary MacKillop, the Australian nun once excommunicated and now beatified, is on her way to canonization. Is she the patron saint of troublemakers? Excommunicated today, canonized tomorrow, says John Allen, puckishly. For me, the best part of her story is how the church itself understands that sometimes even the holiest among us are occasionally at loggerheads with church leadership. (Cf. St. Mother Theodore Guerin)".

They experts all seem to agree, Vitamin D3 offers additional therapeutic benefits with no or very limited increase in side-effects when consumed in far higher doses than had been approved for manufacture prior to 2008. The article is based upon a study documented in a paper that was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN), and cites a variety of sources including the FDA.

Santa Claus 'buried in Ireland'
foxyarse
by foxyarse  Today 5:53 PM
It is thought that the man who inspired the tradition of leaving presents under a Christmas tree, came from a wealthy family and he is believed to have given much of his fortune away. Early pilgrims visited the cathedral in Myra to pay their respects to the bishop. The bishop was originally buried at a local church in Myra, in modern day Turkey, when he died. Historians now believe his body was later moved to the abbey in Ireland by early crusaders. “St Nicholas Church is still standing and there is a slab on the ground which marks St Nicholas's grave,” he said. Few locals know of the much-loved figure’s link with Kilkenny. “It is an amazing story and yet very few people in Ireland know about St Nicholas's connection with this country,” he said. “Every year now we get visitors to the site, but still not that many.” i

AR-15
fatlester
by fatlester  12-18-2009
Photograph and accompanying article of and about the civilian-model AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle. The photo and article spawned an interesting conversation about assault rifles and overheating barrels. Is an assault rifle still a robust weapon if its barrel overheats when fired in rapid succession, requiring time to cool in between clips? Chances are, military versions of this weapon are modified to account for overheating, as it would not make much sense to bring a gun into battle that had to be put down every five minutes or so to cool off. It is my understanding that the issue of the overheating barrels is not unique to the AR-15 rifle in any way, and is a bit of an issue with practically all rapid-fire semi-autos, including the M-4.
