A sad story, but a necessary space explorer. In those days men didnt know what happened when lifeforms were launched on rockets. Clearly Laika provided data that helped Yuri Gagarin and other cosmonauts.

Our Old English Long-Case Clock Rang 12 Times on New Year's Eve
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 6:37 PM    2
Clocks give life to a room, but the tall clocks of the peculiar form that is now 300 years old have a special dignity. To the early American colonist, owning a clock was a status symbol. Most people of that time could not afford a clock of their own and had to rely on the church clock on the town common for the time of day. Privately owned clocks were only found in the finest of homes and were certain to be displayed in a prominent place for all to view. Long-case pendulum clocks were still a new invention in 1736. In 1580 the Astronomer Galileo observed a swinging lamp suspended by a long chain from a cathedral ceiling. He studied its swing and discovered that each swing was equal and had a natural rate of motion. He later found this rate of motion depended upon the length of the chain or pendulum. In 1640 he designed a clock mechanism incorporating the swing of a pendulum, but he died before building his clock design. Read more-watch video http://bit.ly/8Zms7x

Facts for Predicting Global Cooling for the Next Three Decades
amgumen
by amgumen  Yesterday 7:06 PM
Global warming (i.e, the warming since 1977) is over. The minute increase of anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere (0.008%) was not the cause of the warming—it was a continuation of natural cycles that occurred over the past 500 years. The PDO cool mode has replaced the warm mode in the Pacific Ocean, virtually assuring us of about 30 years of global cooling, perhaps much deeper than the global cooling from about 1945 to 1977. Just how much cooler the global climate will be during this cool cycle is uncertain. Recent solar changes suggest that it could be fairly severe, perhaps more like the 1880 to 1915 cool cycle than the more moderate 1945-1977 cool cycle. A more drastic cooling, similar to that during the Dalton and Maunder minimums, could plunge the Earth into another Little Ice Age, but only time will tell if that is likely.

The United Kingdom Ceased to Be a Sovereign State Daniel Hannan MEP

and 160 overseas embassies. Until yesterday, the EU could not annex additional policy areas without a new treaty, which needed to be ratified by all its constituent nations. Now, it has the so-called “passerelle” clause, or self-amending mechanism. Parliament, in other words, no longer has the final say on extensions of EU jurisdiction. The EU derives its authority, not from its 27 members, but from its own foundational texts. Until yesterday, Britain could simply walk out of the EU by abrogating the Treaty of Rome and repealing the 1972 European Communities Act. Henceforth, it will have to go through the secession procedure laid down in Lisbon. In other words " in the minds of Euro-lawyers, at any rate, if not of British constitutionalists " the EU gets to settle the terms on which its members are allowed to leave. Formal sovereignty has been shifted from the national capitals to Brussels. Daniel Hannan MEP at Telegraph Blog http://bit.ly/5bRm5q

Americans Buying Less
debbyski
by debbyski  Yesterday 11:16 AM    2
Quite frankly, why does it surprise everyone that this pyramid scheme finally fell? People simply did not have the money to buy all these goods and the banks gave credit to those who were not credit worthy. When people maxed out on their personal credit cards, banks gave easy lines of home equity loans. It had to all fall because people didn't have the money to buy these goods and now they have to live within their means. It's a good lesson for consumers--sadly one that is probably cyclic in nature.

A different program, unemployment insurance, has rapidly grown, but still omits nearly half the unemployed. Food stamps, easier to get, have become the safety net of last resort."

Where The Preaching Goes Too Far
debbyski
by debbyski  Yesterday 3:51 PM    3
There is no war on evangelical Christians here and they are not being thrown to the lions. As this article states, they are childishly chafing against societal shifts. They don't want to see civil rights for us all because they believe God discriminates and it's their view of religion/politics or the highway. They will always find "token" gays to mimic their views because those poor souls think loving their oppressors will win them approval. But spreading these views to parts of the world with less freedom is downright dangerous and unconscionable.

ACORN Democrat Hack (WhiteWashes) FINDS NO Illegal Pattern on Videos
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 10:25 PM    3
The organization's leadership has made reforms in finances and governance a priority, the Harshbarger report stated. However, it added, this focus has not yet been matched by similar attention to delivering services to ACORN's clients. The videos of ACORN staffers offering advice to a woman and a man posing as a prostitute and her boyfriend triggered a firestorm of criticism this fall, with some ACORN employees appearing willing to support illegal schemes involving tax advice, misuse of public funds and illegal trafficking in children. The videos "feed the impression that ACORN believes it is above the law," stated the Harshbarger report, intended as an independent examination of the issues. "We did not find a pattern of intentional, illegal conduct by ACORN staff involved; in fact, no action, illegal or otherwise, was ever taken by any ACORN employee on behalf of the videographers," Harshbarger said in a statement.

Okay; so we’re back to Square One. Where did the money come from?
mountainpalm
by mountainpalm  Yesterday 8:49 PM    2
That’s right. According to Biderman, the money did not come from (a) companies (“which were a huge net seller”) (b) retail investor funds, (c) retail investors, (d) foreign investors, or (e) pension funds. What about the hedge funds? Biderman: “We have no way to track in real time what hedge funds do, and they may well have shifted some assets into U.S. equities. But we doubt their buying power was enormous because they posted an outflow of $12 billion from April through November.” Okay; so we’re back to Square One. Where did the money come from?
