POPSMeet Japan's First Western Geisha "Sayuki denies she's a flawless example of Japan's ancient flower and willow world. "Being a geisha takes a lifetime to perfect," she deflects, as she clacks along in lacquer sandals that she wears slightly too small to make her size-8 feet look more petite. Sayuki, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, became the first foreign woman in the notoriously closed profession's 400-year history to formally debut as a geisha two years ago, in late 2007. "I've only just begun," she says. "To many of my geisha sisters, I'm still a walking disaster." POPSSara Smile Beautiful song, with a great voice, this has to be one of Hall and Oates bests. Sara Allen was Daryl Hall's girlfriend. They never married, and broke up many years later.. That sucks as much as knowing that Sara had a sister, Janna, who co-wrote songs too with H&O (Kiss is on My List being the biggest one), and she died of leukemia. Hall had fallen head over heels for Sara, a beautiful flight attendant. One night, she came over and he told her he wanted to know what she thought of the latest song he had written. She sat down, and without warning Daryl played a song he called "Sara Smile". Perhaps the heartfelt true nature of the song made it so popular - It was an instant hit. ♪♬ Baby hair with a woman's eyes I can feel you're watching in the night All alone with me and we're waiting for the sunlight When I feel cold, you warm me And when I feel I can't go on, you come and hold me It's you... POPSThe "patron saint of Troublemakers" :) " Blessed Mary MacKillop, the Australian nun once excommunicated and now beatified, is on her way to canonization. Is she the patron saint of troublemakers? Excommunicated today, canonized tomorrow, says John Allen, puckishly. For me, the best part of her story is how the church itself understands that sometimes even the holiest among us are occasionally at loggerheads with church leadership. (Cf. St. Mother Theodore Guerin)".

POPSGeothermal could shake up the world On Dec. 11, U.S. firm AltaRock Energy shut down a California geothermal project known as the Geysers that was based on a similar design as Basel. The Energy Department – which supplied $6 million in funding – had been investigating the project's safety following reports by federal officials that the company had failed to supply sufficient information about the Basel quakes when applying for the go-ahead.

POPSMcAfee SiteAdviser Changes Rating for Clipmarks Surprising...This changed on the latest McAfee update. This is a big deal. For those who have McAfee anti-viral software, and the Firefox add on website monitor, the browser add-on now flashes RED when loading Clipmarks (like spam or phishing sites that you quickly avoid), which always used to be GREEN and safe. This will chase away new users, and possibly current ones if they believe the site is compromising their security and privacy.

POPS"The Number of People Who've Seen This Bill Could Fit in a Phone Booth" Where is the Senate Democrats' health care bill? Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) wants to know. Oh, this mysterious legislation will transform--or perhaps destroy--one-sixth of the US economy. From a McConnell press release: WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate floor Friday regarding the importance of getting it right on health care reform: The majority leader has signaled that he will finally unveil the most significant piece of domestic legislation in modern history some time on Saturday — and force a vote in the middle of the night about 36 hours later. This is outrageous. This will be a bill that none of my constituents have seen; that none of the Majority Leader’s constituents have seen; that none of you have seen and that nobody outside of the Capitol has seen. read more ........ http://bit.ly/729Q0G marathonpundit

POPSCourt-martial warning for pregnant US soldiers It outlines some 20 barred activities. Most of them are aimed at keeping order and preventing criminal activity, such as selling a weapon or taking drugs, but apart from pregnancy includes a ban on elective surgery that would prevent their deployment. Under Gen Cucolo's order, troops also are prohibited from "sexual contact of any kind" with Iraqi nationals. And, they cannot spend the night with a member of the opposite sex, unless married or expressly permitted to do so.

POPSHospital Cleaners More Valuable Than Bankers
Interesting article. More below: "The study, "A Bit Rich" from the New Economics Foundation looked at six different types of British employees in aggregate, and found that: For a salary of between ?50,000 and ?12 million, top advertising executives destroy ?11 of value for every pound in value they generate. # or every ?1 hospital cleaners are paid, over ?10 in social value is generated. # For a salary of between ?75,000 and ?200,000 tax accountants destroy ?47 of value for every pound in value they generate. # For every ?1 of spent on waste recycling workers' wages, ?12 of value will be generated. Contrary to what we might expect, given the vociferous defence of the importance of wholesale banking to the UK economy, the City of London contributes only around 3 per cent of value added every year. Claims have been made about the trickle down effects of wealthy City bankers' spending in the economy but there is little real evidence to back this up"

POPSBig Brother Expands, Introducing Police Headcams Surveillance insanity. The Security merchandisers (who prey on fear and technological enthusiasm) are extracting huge profits from government, at the expense of both citizens tax dollars and privacy. Ironic how the Land of Orwell tolerates this surveillance insanity to buy the latest technological devices as if they are "necessary". Robocop is surely coming in the future, where "remote policing" will probably be the new fad. Watch for headcams to come to American soon....it always follows the UK's lead. national roll-out of head cameras after regional trials proved they were successful in fighting crime, the Government has announced. Of course studies have proven that the UK's CCTV cams DID NOT prove successful in deterring or fighting crime , but that did not prevent their continued and expanded use either.
