POPSCommunity Organizers
I know what community organizers do. I have friends and family who are involved with social work and community organization. They register people to vote. They get people involved with the political process. They know the real, day-to-day problems of the people in their community like the back of their hand. They help people with their life problems, helping elderly folks keep the lights on and helping gro ups with a significant problem get organized enough to get the attention of an alderman or city hall. The people on the ground, the "community organizers" and very local politicians, do a ton of good work for the people of this country. And through that process, they gain a deep understanding of the real problems and thoughts of everyday people. I held out hope that during the Convention, I could get a real grasp on where the Republican Party was.Last night, Sarah Palin gave a speech that was in theory meant to get people like me excited about the Republican ticket.

POPSEnd Times A-Coming? A recurring argument lodged by theists against atheists is their inabilitiy to understand how non-believers can exist in a world of no god-given purpose. Theists seem incapable of comprehending the simple (to me at least) idea that each of us fashions our own purpose and meaning in life. This article touches on that aspect of thought.

POPS"More Communist than China" "Socialism for the rich." How true! Investors should not pin their hopes on this year's presidential election for a solution to the problems, as none of the candidates is likely to find one, Rogers said. "This is a big huge mess and neither one of them has a clue what to do next year. It's going to be a mess."

POPSHappy? "Economic gains that bring more food, clothing, shelter, medical care and longer life can result in a substantial increase in subjective well-being for poor societies, he says. But once a society reaches a certain threshold, further economic growth brings only minimal gains. Among the richest societies, increases in income are only weakly linked with higher levels of subjective well-being. While economic growth helps promote happiness for some, democratization and rising social tolerance contribute even more. Democracy provides more choice, which promotes happiness. Support for gender equality and tolerance of people who are different from oneself are also strongly linked, not just because tolerant people are happier, but because living in a tolerant society enhances everyone's freedom, Inglehart says."

POPSThe Lunatic Fringe's Political Twilight Zone (revisited) After 8 long years of the Bush Twilight Zone. Here we are again being sucked into the McCain's version of this same Zone. Where the HELL is reality? McCain's pick of Sarah Palin is almost as troubling as a W. Bush second win. After proving himself totally incompetent with his first 4 years, the US people gave him the majority vote to rule for another 4 years. I know the rest of the world must think of us as Nut Cases. And we deserved the title! Sarah Palin is as nutty as a Jerry Falwell, the "man" who had babbled "AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it's God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals." AND, "The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country." ALSO, "Good Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions." POPSMore than just supporting abortion "Killing alive unborn children in females’ bodies is bad enough, but Barack Obama went even further, to defend the killing via neglect of alive BORN children. It is downright ghoulish that he is proud of that record and is still trying to spin his deceit in the Saddleback interview."

POPSWe Regret To Inform You "If one thing is clear about the American Widow Project, it is that its women are still deeply in love with their husbands."

POPSJohn McCain and Sarah Palin's Guerrilla Campaigning in Colorado Springs This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin. UPDATE I: I just spoke with the person at Invesco who found the flags and he thinks both sides are exaggerating a bit. The person claims the majority of the bags with flags in them were near the trash, on a dock, and would have been thrown away. The person thinks it was probably an “oversight” by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag. But the person doesn’t believe anyone was coming to get them: “The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them.” http://blogs.denverpost.com/opinion/2008/09/06/republican-recycling/

POPSOuch!... Palin Slams Obama On His Ridiculous Surge Stands Experienced Governor Palin blasted him on his surge stands today: Watch MSNBC video at site: http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2008/09/ouch-palin-slams-obama-on-his.html In more bad news for the democratic media conglomerate-- 10,000 subscribers called Us magazine to cancel their subscriptions after their hit piece on Sarah Palin. Hat Tip Andy B. And, Patrick corrected my earlier numbers... Over 40 million watched Sarah Palin on Wednesday not 37 million. The Nielsen ratings showed that Palin attracted a huge female audience of 19.5 million women, nearly 5 million larger than the third day of the Democratic convention when Hillary Clinton spoke. Sarah better look out. The media is hot on her tail and not because they like her. http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2008/09/one-is-two-palin-now-more-popular-than.html

POPSWhy Is Billionaire Fueling His 747 With Coconut Oil? Environmentally speaking, wouldn’t we be better off just continuing to use petroleum-based aviation fuel instead of claiming vast swaths of land to grow coconuts to use in Mr. Branson’s new toy? The absolute lack of common sense from the left at times leaves me speechless.

POPSOnce Again...This is Not Capitalism “I think that we’ve got to keep people in their homes,” McCain declared in an interview aired Sunday on the CBS news program “Face the Nation.” He continued: “There’s got to be restructuring, there’s got to be reorganization, and there’s got to be some confidence that we’ve stopped this downward spiral.” Obama proclaimed that the takeover should not be used to “protect investors and speculators who relied on the government to reap massive profits,” while McCain denounced “executives were making hundreds of—some billion dollars a year while things were going downhill.” The Republican candidate acknowledged, “This is the kind of cronyism, corruption, that’s made people so justifiably angry.” All of this is empty demagogy. The speculation, cronyism and corruption that pervaded the operations of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are emblematic of the parasitism and criminality of the America’s ruling financial elite as a whole.

POPSHawaii’s 1st Jewish Governor: Palin More Experienced Than Obama “It’s not like being in Congress, where no one might know you’re responsible,” she told Haaretz. “When you’re a governor you’re the one to make a decision. It’s a great, great preparation for a job such as vice president.” According to Lingle, the Republican Party is likely to attract growing numbers of Jewish voters because “the Republicans have a much stronger position on Israel than the Democrats, and that’s why I think more people will be seen on the Republican side. Lingle was interviewed on the FOX programme and she noted that Palin spoke at an energy conference in Hawaii and impressed everyone with her knowledge of the issues. While there she went into labour and flew back to Alaska to have her baby and was back on the job shortly thereafter. "Senator McCain’s commitment to Israel is strong and well-known, and I assure your readers that he would not put someone on that ticket who did not have the same feelings."

POPSVeteran Soldiers against the War Five years ago tonight, on March 19th 2003, the U.S. launched the invasion of Iraq. Half a decade later, as the occupation continues with no end in sight, some of the most powerful voices against the war have been the men and women who have fought in it. For four days this past weekend, soldiers convened at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland for Winter Soldier, an eyewitness account of the war and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan. We broadcast their voices.

POPSWhy is pleasure so suspicious? "The best sort of life, says Epicurus, is one that is free from pain in the body and from disturbance in the mind. That sounds a rather negative credo for a 21st-century devotee of the good life. Were he writing self-help books today, Epicurus would probably acknowledge that you can aim a little higher than that. He might point out in his own defence that health and peace are essential preconditions of happiness, and are easy to belittle if you are lucky enough to have them. But perhaps his most useful observation for the discerning hedonists of today, when such an intoxicating variety of gratifications are dangled before them, is a reminder of caveat emptor: "No pleasure is in itself evil, but the things which produce certain pleasures entail annoyances many times greater than the pleasures themselves."

POPSExtreme Eats There's a scene in the 1970 film Fatso when an overweight character poses the following question to his friends: "Did you ever suck the jelly out of a jelly doughnut and then fill it with chocolate swirl ice cream?" Most people react to that query in one of two ways: They either say to themselves, "That's disgusting!" or "That's disgusting ... I want one!"
